Restoration Underway of Hornsey Town Hall Square

The closure of the Town Hall Square in September 2020 marked an exciting and significant milestone for the restoration of Hornsey Town Hall and FEC’s commitment to deliver back to the community a beautiful public space, in keeping with the spirit of the original design.

The plan is to re-open the Town Hall Square towards Autumn 2021, so once again it can be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Although for many this feels like a significant period, the length of time the square is closed reflects the level of extensive works required to complete the new lighting, landscaping and seating areas.

Angela Walsh, Sales and Marketing Director, Far East Consortium says, “We understand the pivotal role that the Town Hall Square plays in the community of Crouch End, which is why FEC is taking such great care to restore this much-loved public space. We are excited that works are underway and we have already begun to make the upgrades and changes needed to transform this historic site into a landmark that can be enjoyed for many years to come.”

Through extensive public consultation and community feedback, the collective decision was made to honour Reginald Uren’s original design, which will see elements reinstated such as the original fountain, historic street lighting and paving.

The large open lawn and existing mature trees will remain the focal point of the Town Hall Square as they always have been. Ornamental and seasonal planting around the edge of the green will be sensitive to the existing planting and add colour and texture to the space.

The two mature trees towards the back of the green and the tree nearest to The Broadway, known to locals as the “Memorial Tree”, will remain in their current locations.

Once completed, the Town Hall Square will be open and accessible to the public and continue to play host to a number of community-focused events, festivals and markets, adding to the diverse culture and vibrancy of Crouch End.
